How to Choose a Ring & Which Finger to Wear It On

A thin everyday band, an adjustable open ring, a statement piece for evenings out: the women's ring is the most personal piece of jewelry, the one we look at most often… since it's right in front of us all day long. Here's how to choose yours based on your style and your hands, which finger to wear it on (and what that means), and how to get the size right.

The different styles of women's rings

The thin band

Simple and understated, it's worn alone every day or stacked with others. It's the ultimate minimalist ring.

The adjustable open ring

Its two ends don't meet, so you can adjust it by one or two sizes by gently squeezing or widening it. It's the ideal ring when you don't know your size, or to give as a gift.

The statement ring

Wide, sculptural or set with a colored stone, it gets noticed and stands on its own. Wear it alone, on a hand with no other rings, so it gets all the attention: wavy designs, hammered discs, turquoise…

Stackable and multi-band rings

Several thin bands worn together on one finger: mix and match them as you like, or choose a multi-band ring that gives the look in a single piece.

The symbol ring

Heart, crown, flower, sun and moon: a ring that tells a story, often given as a gift.

The fidget ring

Rolling beads, spinning enamel rings, a rotating flower: the fidget ring (or spinner ring) keeps your fingers busy, discreetly. Styles, sizing, the best finger: it's all in our fidget ring guide.

Trending women's rings

  • Textured gold: hammered rings, wavy rings, detailed edges.
  • Colored stones: turquoise, pink, green or amber stones that add a vintage touch.
  • Wide, sculptural rings, worn alone like a little work of art.
  • Stacking: several thin rings across several fingers, sticking to one metal.

Which finger should you wear a ring on?

There's no rule, with one exception: the left ring finger, traditionally reserved for the wedding band and engagement ring in France, as in the US. For the rest, each finger has its popular symbolism and its effect:

  • The thumb: associated with independence and self-assertion. A thumb ring gives a very fashion-forward look.
  • The index finger: associated with confidence and ambition. It's the ideal finger for a statement ring, since it's very visible.
  • The middle finger: associated with balance. As the longest finger, it shows off wide rings and stones.
  • The ring finger: love and commitment. On the left, the wedding band; on the right, a fashion ring or an heirloom ring.
  • The pinky: associated with communication and creativity. A thin ring adds a subtle, original touch.

For a balanced hand: wear your boldest ring on your index or middle finger, and thinner bands on the other fingers.

Which ring suits your hands?

  • Long, slender fingers: you can wear anything, including wide rings and large stones.
  • Short fingers: go for thin bands and elongated shapes (oval, teardrop, marquise) that visually lengthen the finger. Avoid very wide rings that "cut" the finger.
  • Petite hands: delicate rings and small stones are the most flattering.
  • Larger hands: wide rings and statement styles are perfectly proportioned.

How to find your ring size

The simplest method is to measure your finger's circumference with a strip of paper, or the inner diameter of a ring you already wear. In France, ring size equals the finger's circumference in millimeters: a size 54 measures 54 mm around (about a US size 7). The most common women's sizes fall between 50 and 56 (about US 5 to 7.75). All the methods, plus tips for discreetly finding out someone else's size, are in our article how to find your ring size without getting it wrong.

Good to know: fingers swell slightly at the end of the day and in hot weather. Measure in the evening, so the ring won't feel tight when your fingers are at their largest. And to avoid any risk, choose an adjustable open ring.

Which material for a women's ring?

The ring is the piece of jewelry that sees the most wear: it rubs against objects, gets wet every time you wash your hands, and is exposed to soap and hand sanitizer. That makes stainless steel an excellent choice for a ring you wear every day: it doesn't rust, stands up to knocks and scratches very little. With a gold-tone ring, take it off to do the dishes or clean, to protect the finish. Learn all about it in our stainless steel jewelry guide, and to compare metals, read sterling silver vs. gold-plated vs. solid gold.

How to wear multiple rings

  • One statement piece per hand, surrounded by thin bands.
  • One metal, or a deliberate gold-and-silver mix (see gold or silver jewelry).
  • Leave breathing room: four or five rings spread across both hands are plenty, leaving at least one bare finger next to a bold ring.
  • Think about your bracelets: if your wrists are already heavily accessorized, keep your fingers simpler.
