Stainless Steel Jewelry: Waterproof, Tarnish & Care Guide

Just a few years ago, steel was reserved for watches and men's jewelry. Today, stainless steel jewelry has earned its place in every jewelry box: dainty gold bracelets, pendant necklaces, hoop earrings, open rings… Durable, affordable and easy to live with, it checks almost every box. But what makes stainless steel jewelry so popular? Is it really water-resistant, does it tarnish, how do you clean it, and should you choose it over silver? Here's our complete guide.

What is stainless steel in jewelry?

Stainless steel is an iron alloy containing at least 10.5% chromium. When exposed to air, that chromium forms an invisible protective layer on the surface that prevents rust: that's what makes it "stainless." In jewelry, you'll mostly come across two grades:

  • 304 steel (often called "18/8" for its 18% chromium and 8% nickel): the most common grade, sturdy and resistant to everyday water.
  • 316L steel: it also contains molybdenum, which makes it even more corrosion-resistant, especially to salt and sweat. This is the steel often called "surgical steel."

At S&F Bijoux, the grade used is listed in each product description: the vast majority of our pieces are 304 stainless steel, and some are 316L, like our long mariner chain necklace.

Why is stainless steel jewelry so popular?

1. It doesn't rust and handles water

That's its number one advantage: stainless steel jewelry doesn't tarnish like silver or turn green like brass or copper. A rain shower, hand washing or a summer day won't damage it.

2. It's durable

Steel is a hard metal: it scratches far less than silver or gold and doesn't bend at the slightest knock. A stainless steel bracelet worn every day keeps its shape for years.

3. It's affordable

Steel costs much less than precious metals. That means you can treat yourself to several on-trend pieces, switch up your style, or give a lovely gift without breaking the bank. In our shop, most of our steel jewelry is between $10 and $25.

4. It comes in gold, silver… and colors

Steel can stay natural (silver color) or get a gold finish, through electroplating or PVD, a vacuum coating process that holds up better to wear. The result: the look of gold jewelry for a fraction of the price. Pieces can then be set with cubic zirconia, mother-of-pearl or enamel.

5. It's generally well tolerated by the skin

The nickel in stainless steel is tightly bound within the alloy, and EU regulations strictly limit how much nickel a piece of jewelry can release on contact with skin. Most people wear steel with no problem. That said, if you're very sensitive to nickel, choose 316L steel and ask your doctor or dermatologist for advice.

Is stainless steel jewelry waterproof?

Yes, that's one of its biggest strengths. Stainless steel doesn't rust: you can wash your hands, get caught in the rain or sweat without any risk to the metal. In practice:

  • Shower: steel handles it just fine. It's mostly soaps and body washes that dull the surface and, over time, wear down a gold finish.
  • Ocean: steel resists salt, and 316L even better than 304. Just rinse your jewelry with clean water after swimming.
  • Pool: chlorine is harsh on every finish. It's best to take your jewelry off, especially gold-tone pieces.
  • Set pieces: cubic zirconia, mother-of-pearl or enamel are often glued or inlaid; repeated exposure to water can weaken them. Take them off to swim.

Bottom line: natural stainless steel jewelry can stay on your wrist in almost any situation; gold-tone jewelry will keep its shine longer if you skip the daily shower and the pool.

Does stainless steel jewelry tarnish?

No. Unlike silver, which tarnishes when exposed to sulfur in the air and on the skin, stainless steel doesn't oxidize under normal conditions. It doesn't turn green either, unlike copper or brass, and won't leave marks on your skin.

If your jewelry changes appearance, it's usually for one of these reasons:

  • The gold finish wears off in spots from friction: the steel underneath shows through with its silver color (not black).
  • A film of lotion, perfume or skin oils dulls the surface: a simple cleaning brings back the shine.
  • The piece isn't entirely steel: some pieces combine steel with copper or brass, which can darken over time. That's why it pays to check the material listed on the product page.

Gold-tone stainless steel: how does the plating work?

A "gold" steel piece is steel coated with a thin gold-colored layer. There are two processes:

  • Electroplating (classic "plating"): the piece is dipped in a bath that deposits a layer of gold or gold-colored metal on its surface. The result is very bright.
  • PVD (physical vapor deposition): the color is applied in a vacuum, creating a harder, better-bonded layer that stands up better to friction and sweat.

Either way, how long the gold finish lasts depends mostly on use: a necklace worn over a sweater wears far less than a ring or bracelet rubbing against things all day. Good care habits (see below) make all the difference.

Stainless steel vs. sterling silver: what's the difference?

Both have the same bright white color, but they're very different to live with:

Stainless steelSterling silver (925)
CompositionIron and chromium alloy (+ nickel, molybdenum for 316L)92.5% pure silver, 7.5% other metals

Our advice: stainless steel is ideal for everyday jewelry and trendy pieces you want to switch up without spending a fortune; sterling silver suits those who want a precious metal and don't mind a little upkeep. The stainless steel bracelet: the most-worn piece

The bracelet is probably the piece that benefits most from steel's qualities: it's exposed to water, rubs against desks and bags… Chain bracelets, open bangles, multi-strand styles: steel makes every shape possible.

The stainless steel necklace: dainty chains and pendants

A stainless steel necklace has the advantage of being wearable day and night without worrying about the chain. Tree of life pendant, heart, clover, mariner chain: these are the styles you keep on all week long.

Stainless steel earrings and rings

Steel also works beautifully for stud and hoop earrings, which many of us leave in around the clock, as well as for adjustable open rings that fit several finger sizes. Our guides to women's earrings and women's rings will help you choose.

Women's stainless steel jewelry: how to choose well

  • Check the steel grade (304 or 316L): a reputable seller lists it. Be wary of listings that only say "metal" or "alloy."
  • Look at the finish: PVD gold holds up better to friction than a thin standard plating.
  • Tell steel apart from other materials: some pieces combine steel with copper, or are made of brass. They're just as pretty, but less water-resistant.
  • Think about the clasp and extender: an extender chain lets you adjust a bracelet or necklace to fit you.

How to clean and care for stainless steel jewelry

Cleaning, step by step

  1. Fill a bowl with warm water and a few drops of mild soap (Marseille soap or dish soap).
  2. Let the piece soak for a few minutes.
  3. Rub gently: with a soft toothbrush for natural steel, with your fingers or a soft cloth for gold-tone pieces.
  4. Rinse with clean water.
  5. Dry thoroughly with a soft, lint-free cloth, without leaving the piece damp.

Avoid: abrasives (baking soda, toothpaste, scouring powder), silver polish and bleach, which scratch or attack the gold finish. For set pieces, also avoid long soaks.

Everyday habits

  • put on perfume, lotion and hairspray before your jewelry;
  • take it off for the pool, intense workouts and cleaning;
  • wipe it with a soft cloth after wearing;
  • store each piece separately, in a pouch or jewelry box, to avoid scratches and tangles.

FAQ

Can you sleep in stainless steel jewelry?

The steel itself won't mind, but fine chains can tangle or catch on the sheets and break. For comfort and to make your jewelry last, it's best to take off necklaces and bracelets at night.

How can you tell if jewelry is really stainless steel?

Rely on the material listed by the seller, ideally with the grade (304 or 316L). The magnet test isn't reliable: the steels used in jewelry are only slightly magnetic or not at all, but plenty of other metals aren't either.

What's the difference between 304 and 316L steel?

Both are stainless. 316L contains molybdenum, which makes it more resistant to salt and sweat; 304 is perfectly suited to everyday jewelry.

Is stainless steel jewelry a good gift?

Yes: durable, affordable and easy to wear, it's a safe bet. Find our ideas in what jewelry to give a woman.
