Rigid, elegant and easy to slip on, the bangle bracelet is one of the most timeless pieces of jewelry. It dresses the wrist with no chain or clasp, works alone as a statement piece or stacked, and never goes out of style. How do you choose your bangle, how do you put it on, and what jewelry should you pair it with? Here's our complete guide.
What is a bangle bracelet?
A bangle is a rigid bracelet, round or oval in shape. Its French name, "jonc," comes from the rush plant, whose straight, flexible stems were once woven into rings. Unlike a chain bracelet, it holds its shape: it doesn't wrap around the wrist, it encircles it.
There are several types:
- The closed bangle: a full circle you slide on over your hand. It needs to be wide enough to get past your knuckles.
- The open bangle: it has a gap that lets you slip it on from the side of your wrist. It's the most practical and most common style today.
- The hinged bangle: it opens in two parts thanks to a hinge and closes with a clasp.
- The cuff: a very wide open bangle, often hammered or textured, worn as a statement piece.

How to choose your bangle size
Size is the most important thing, because a bangle doesn't adjust like a chain:
- Measure your wrist with a soft tape measure, just above the bone.
- For a closed bangle, what matters is the width of your hand (with your thumb tucked in): the bangle has to slide over it.
- For an open bangle, check the inner diameter and the size of the gap: it can be slightly tightened or loosened by hand, but gently and as rarely as possible, so you don't weaken the metal.
A well-fitted bangle can turn on your wrist without sliding down onto your hand.
How to put on an open bangle
It's easy once you know the trick: place the opening of the bangle against the narrowest side of your wrist (the inner side), then rotate it so it wraps around your wrist. No need to pull it apart: the rotation is what slips your wrist through the opening. To take it off, do the reverse.
How to wear a bangle bracelet
Alone, for a minimalist look
A thin gold bangle on a bare wrist, with a white tee or a shirt with rolled-up sleeves: effortless elegance. Wider bangles, like our wide hammered bangle, stand on their own and replace all your other jewelry.
In twos or threes, for a stack
Thin bangles look great worn together: they clink softly and bring movement to the wrist. Play with textures: one smooth bangle, one braided like our wheat braid bangle, one double-wire like our double wavy wire bangle.
With a watch
A bangle is the perfect companion to a watch: place it on the hand side or the forearm side, in the same color as the watch case for a cohesive look.
With a sweater or jacket
In winter, wear it over a thin sleeve or let it peek out from a short-sleeved sweater: its rigid shape stays visible, unlike a dainty chain.
What jewelry to pair with a bangle
With a chain bracelet
This is the most successful pairing: the rigid bangle contrasts with the fluid chain. For example, add a dainty chain or a clover bracelet next to your bangle.
With a matching necklace
Repeat a motif from one piece to the next: a tree of life bangle with a tree of life pendant, a mariner chain bangle with a mariner chain necklace. Read our article on the long mariner chain necklace for a coordinated look.
With rings
A gold bangle goes beautifully with one or two thin rings in the same color. If the bangle is wide, keep the rings understated so your hand doesn't look overloaded.
With a cord or boho bracelet
For a more relaxed look, pair a gold bangle with a cord bracelet or a multi-strand bracelet. All our pairing ideas are in the guide how to stack bracelets.
Bangle bracelets: which material to choose?
Most of our bangles are stainless steel with a gold finish: they're water-resistant and keep their shape. A few styles are gold-plated copper, lighter but more sensitive to moisture. The material is always listed on the product page. To learn all about steel, read stainless steel jewelry: why is it so popular?
Caring for your bangle
- take it off for the pool, the beach, cleaning and workouts;
- wipe it with a soft cloth after wearing;
- avoid opening and closing it too often: the metal could weaken;
- store it separately so it doesn't scratch your other jewelry.

FAQ
What's the difference between a bangle and a cuff?
A cuff is a very wide open bangle, often several centimeters (over an inch) wide. A classic bangle is thinner.
Can you wear a bangle every day?
Yes, especially in stainless steel: it doesn't tangle, doesn't snag and stands up to everyday life.
How many bangles should you wear at once?
Two to four thin bangles make a beautiful stack. With a wide bangle, one is enough, perhaps paired with a dainty chain.
