Buying a ring online, for yourself or as a gift, means knowing the exact size. Good news: there are several simple ways to figure it out without going to a jeweler.
The String Method
Wrap a thin piece of string or paper around the base of the finger, mark where the two ends meet, then measure that length with a ruler. This measurement in millimeters is the circumference of the finger, which you can then match to a ring size using a size chart.
Use a Ring That Already Fits
If you already have a ring that fits the person well, measure its inside diameter (the hole) with a ruler, in millimeters. This is often the most reliable method, as long as you pick a ring worn on the same finger.
A Few Size Benchmarks
French ring sizes usually range from 48 to 62 (about US 4.5 to US 10). As a guide, a French size 50 (about US 5.25) corresponds to an inside diameter of about 15.9 mm, and a size 56 (about US 7.75) to about 17.8 mm. If you're between two sizes, it's better to size up: a ring that's too big is easier to tighten than a ring that's too small is to enlarge.
For a Surprise Gift
It's hard to ask for someone's ring size without raising suspicion! A few tricks: discreetly borrow a ring she wears every day on the right finger, or check the size of someone close to you with a similar hand shape.
Good to Know
- Finger size can vary slightly with temperature (fingers swell a little in the heat).
- Measure at the end of the day if possible, when your fingers are slightly larger.
- If you're torn between two close sizes, a jeweler can resize some rings after purchase.
